PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE FORMATION OF THE JANUARY 20 MOVEMENT AND DECLARATION OF NATIONWIDE PROTEST

The January 20 Movement hereby announces its formation as a nationwide civic coalition of Nigerians committed to the defense of democratic accountability, economic justice, and the collective welfare of the Nigerian people.

Arising from widespread public concern over the recently enacted tax law passed by the National Assembly, which Nigerians widely believe was forged, manipulated, and imposed without transparency or genuine public consent, the January 20 Movement declares a total nationwide protest and shutdown of economic and civic activities commencing from 20 January 2026. This action shall remain in force until the said tax law is completely withdrawn.

The January 20 Movement affirms unequivocally that it is committed only to actions that advance the cause of a better, fairer, and more just Nigeria. In pursuit of this objective, the Movement shall adopt strictly peaceful and lawful approaches, including but not limited to:

  • Peaceful rallies and marches

  • Industrial and labor actions

  • Public forums, town halls, and online discussions

  • Coordinated social media engagements

  • Television and radio appearances to educate and mobilize the public

Violence, destruction of property, and intimidation are expressly rejected.

As part of its first set of demands, the January 20 Movement calls for the immediate resignation and/or removal of Mr. Zacch Adedeji from office as Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Furthermore, the Movement demands a thorough, independent investigation into allegations of forgery and attempted fraud related to the tax law, and where culpability is established, full prosecution in accordance with the law. No public office holder is above accountability.

In order to protect the integrity of this struggle and to prevent infiltration, coercion, or compromise, the January 20 Movement shall operate without any known or designated leadership. No individual or group is authorized to present themselves as leaders of the Movement for engagement with government or other interests. The Movement belongs to the Nigerian people collectively.

Accordingly, the headquarters of the January 20 Movement is in the hearts of Nigerians, in every home, workplace, street, and community where citizens stand for justice, transparency, and national dignity.

This is a call to conscience, solidarity, and peaceful resistance. Nigerians are urged to participate responsibly, lawfully, and resolutely until justice is served and the will of the people is respected.

Nigeria deserves better. Nigerians demand better. And together, peacefully, we shall achieve it.
